Summer is almost over and the back-to-school spirit is starting to fill up storefronts to the dismay of everyone. I was lucky enough to be able to leave for one week and travel to the island of Djerba in Tunisia and spend some quality time with my boyfriend who I haven’t seen since my move to Paris last December.
Long-distance relationships are hard and not knowing when we will see each other again is even harder. I didn’t want to spend the vacation searching for places to take pictures or check my emails every hour but really enjoy every second of this vacation. Most days my phone was left untouched in my bag, and pictures were taken unplanned on a whim. It felt nice.
Djerba is an island where there is not much to do aside from spending time on the beach, swimming in the pool and enjoying daily activities that hotels organize. It was the perfect place to relax and catch up with all the months we have spent apart. It felt so good to finally have time to finish the book I was reading, relax in the morning and not worry about social media.
It was my first time visiting North Africa and I knew I wanted to see some local architecture and try some traditional food. Lucky for me, my boyfriend is a native Arabic speaker and we were able to get some information from our hotel lobby on places to find late night restaurants where we ended up discovering the best-grilled meat and fish I have ever tasted.
We also took the time to go to Djerbahood, a small neighborhood in the center of the island where the architecture was picture perfect. Artists from all around the world painted beautiful murals throughout the area which made it even more charming and enjoyable to get lost in the small streets to discover them all.
Unfortunately, the week went by in the blink of an eye and it was time to say goodbye again. Tears were shed and hugs were given. On my three hour trip back to Paris, I just wanted to rewind time and start it all over again.
It took me one week to be able to look back at the pictures but I now see how fortunate we were to have spent an amazing holiday together under the sun.
